Nagios or similar

Hi!

Is it possible to monitor services in servers inside the network secured by ASL, and report by e-mail, log, etc. like Nagios does?

Would it be difficult to integrate Nagios with ASL?

    Do you mean run Nagios on ASL? It would take a LOT of work, and even then, it still might not run correctly as ASL isnt a standard distro. Highly advised not to do this.

    Not really if you think about it.  Nagios is meant to monitor systems, it really should not provide any service itself.  If the firewall goes down or part of it goes down (proxy) I want to know about it.  If Nagios is on the firewall chances are it went with it, how is it going to notify me then?

    Like firewalls, nagios really should be dedicated to a machine.

    We use Uptime Software's uptime product to monitor our ASL (uptime is a commercial wrapper around nagios).  Best way is to use SNMP (and some restrictive rulesets on the ASL) - you'll still have a problem if you use email (outbound SMTP) for your alerting, should the ASL go down.  To cover this, we use external monitoring as well, still just SMTP to our on-call pager (my cell phone!).
