Why am I losing my connectivity?

I'm a bit of a newbie here so bare with me.
I have my DSL connection coming into the external jack in my firewall.  And then a cable out from the internal into a 16 port switch which feeds the rest of my office.  The DNS Server1 points to my server which hands out internal IP addresses.
Everything has been running great, but over the past few weeks, we've been losing our connectivity in random bursts.  One fellow mentioned I should be keeping my log files under 50MB which I have been.  I just can't figure out why one minute my internet (and email delivery) is flying and the next minute we're down and then back up again.  We are outside the city and at the end of our provider's fibre loop, but they report no drop in bandwidth on their end when this happens.  Any ideas?  Do you think I may be overlooking something?  Any help is greatly appreciated.  Thanks.

    have your phone line checked for noise..also make sure your DSL filters are not failing(have telco check/replace them).  If that does not work post back and let us know there is a pppoe tweak that may apply to you..who is your telco(the ILEC)?

    Bell Canada owns the lines. The service is through Futureway Comm Inc. (www.fcibroadband.com). We had a heck of a time getting one of their technicians out here to drop another loop for us when we moved into this office space. We are at the very end of their loop and the furthest away from their closest station.  As well, they had a major outage today in Toronto, so that might have contributed as well.  I'm just curious if there's anything to do with the firewall that I can tweak or check on to see if this behaviour is being caused by the firewall and not just are bad choice of geographical positioning?  Anything you can think of?  Thanks for your reply by the way.

    your problem may jsut be your distance from their pop..DSL is distance limited..if they had a major outage today i am betting hte fault is either phone line(probably not) or their circuits(more than likely..even if they say nothing is wrong)..Astaro is rock solid on hanging on..go into the webadmin and check the interface status..see if it shows up or down....The one thing about ASL4 is it waits 15 or so minutes before reconnecting.  i bet this is a phoneline/isp issue.

    Dennis, do you notice on any of your machines when it does this it says maybe on a XP box that it quickly shows that there is a network cable unplugged and then goes right back into it and all works fine ?

    It looks to me as you did not have this problem before using the firewall. And this problem has arised since the inception of installing ASL

    Could you please also check if you are still able to ping from the firewall to a host in the web? Do a ping from console to www.google.de for example. Please also check your kernellog at the moment the problem occures.
    Could you please post your Current Packet Filter Rules and Current NAT rules (Webadmin -> Packet Filer -> Filer LiveLog)?
    You can check your PPPoE-connection in the daemon log. Maybe this will give you some hints.
