Mail proxy with dyn IP

I'm planing to set up a Astaro FW at my home network. There is still a question I'm thinking about. [:S] 

I only have dynamic IP. Therefor I cannot set up a local mail server but have to use the POP3/SMTP proxy on the Astaro box. Can I benefit from the virus protection and the spam filter under this circumstances?

    that works like a charme here. I have installed the dyndns patch available @ http://docs.astaro.org/older_versions/ASL-V3.2/docs_v3/hacking/dyndns.tar.gz and have set the lowest MX record for my domain to the dyndns name of my firewall. The package is ready to use with dyndns.org but other services can be used also (needs adjustments in the config). If I were you I'd register at dyndns.org (it's free of charge) since the coming version of Astaro will also support it as far as I know.

    Thanks for the fine answer. I've heard about dyddns and I'm going to do as you wrote. Good luck, last week I've moved my domain to an new provider where I can access the DNS entries. Just a few more questions:

    - Does the hack in your link also work with the current astaro V4?

    - If I do as you wrote I have to run a local mail server such as postfix? On Astaro I have to enable SMTP and POP3 proxy? Local user clients (such as Outlook) then have to talk with my local mailserver and only with that?

    - What happens with the mails sent to my account if my own server or the IP connection to my ISP is down for any reason? Are they lost? Has this something to do with the "lowest MX record" in your answer?

    I have a few days free from work this week and I'm going to try this as soon as my domain is totally registered with the new ISP.

    Yes of course

    ?2  You will need an internal mailserver which receives e-mail for your domain from Astaro SMTP proxy. Your mailserver should use Astaro mail proxy for relaying so there is no need to allow POP3 or to enable the POP3 proxy on the firewall since your clients fetch their mail from the internal mailserver.

    One problem may appear. Many mail relays do not accept e-mail from dynamic assigned addresses furthermore those addresses are very often listed in RBL lists. Ask your provider about a smarthost  and if available use it. As far as I know Astaro supports plain and auth as authentication method (it is important to know)

    ?3 If your internal mail server is down incoming mail would be queued up on the firewall, think up to six days - should be long enough to bring the broken box back to life. If the firewall (or better the SMTP proxy) wouldn't be reachable mail should be stored on the backup mailserver @ your provider (secondary MX).

    Version 5 has in-built dyndns support btw.

    I've never seen V5 on the download page. Is it still free for personal luse? And were can I download it?
