Notification on PPPoE dial-up?

I would really like to be notified when the PPPoE connection to my ISP drops. 
Where do I point my "hack"-axe to send an email when the PPPoE session looses connection?

    i have resolve this on a seperate server behind the asl. i written a script which check the IP with a ping on the external interface of asl every 5min. this file create a logfile and send notify if the connection is down. it works great.
