Turn off/Slow down logging?

Is it possible to turn off or slow down the ASL logging?  My ASL setup uses a rather loud harddrive and it writes to the hdd every 3.5 seconds, regardless of traffic flowing through the router.  No proxy's are setup and its basically running as a simple NAT router with 2 filters.  

Why does it need to write to the harddrive every couple of seconds?  Is there a way to disable logging, thus making the router much quieter?  

Would more ram decrease the amount of hdd activity?  ASL is currently running on a P200 with 64MB ram and is a firewall for 4 computers.

    you could delete the chain LOG_CHAIN after each boot.

    then tere will be no more logging at all without affecting operation...

    Would there be a way to automatically set this so it wouldn't need to be updated every time ASL is rebooted?  Thanks for the idea.

    You would hook it into a script in /sbin/init.d; Search on some posts to come to an understanding of this.

    There are 'levels' of system startup; the script to do the deleting could be put into /sbin/init.d, then a symbolic link (using ln) is made in the appropriate level directory. Usually rc3 (?) is where things are done after the base disk drivers and whatnot have been loaded by previous levels. The links are executed in lexical collating order, so an artifice introduced in Linux to insure that they are processed in desired sequence is to use an appropriate numeric prefix.

    OR: find a script in these directories related to logging and add a call to your log deleting script. The hazard of doing it this way is an Astaro (logging) patch is more likely to knock your fix out.

    NOPE! Tried it and it dont work!

    I did a Script called S99log which basically delete the LOG_CHAIN, this is the last script executed before login and guess what, I found out that even at the last script execution, the iptables chains a not loaded....

    if you wnat to test is by yerself, just do a script that does the following: iptables -L>output.txt

    you will see that all filter are empty....

    but if you boot and execute the script as the 1st command after logging in, it work... do not ask me why, I'm still puzzeled...

    OK; are we deleting a file or an iptable?
