DSL connection question

We just downloaded a trial version of ASL, and its installed in one of our machine.

The machine has 2 ethernet :
- eth0 -> 10.0.0.128, connected to a hub to a local network
- eth1 -> still free.

Currently we are using ADSL connection with this specification:
- Encapsulation: PPPoA VC-Mux (Static IP address)
- SweeX DSL modem
- eth IP address = 10.0.0.138, used as our local LAN gateway to internet
- it has Virtual Servers feature, working like port forwarding (we run mail servers in the local LAN).
- it does NAT also.

The modem can dial/connect to the ISP automatically, it has "Automatic Reconnect" feature.

We dont use DHCP at all.

We plan to use ASL to protect our local LAN. So, eth1 (currently free) should be connected to the ADSL modem eth.

Our questions :
- Should we define a new IP range for ASL:eth1 and ADSL:eth ? 
- Do we need to modify our ADSL configuration ? because the public internet IP (static, given by ISP) is configured there. And currectly, the modem will try to connect to ISP automatically.

We are not quite understand with how should we configure ASL and also the ADSL modem (and the eth connection between them).

Please help.

    Hmm, if I understand it right, you would like to put the ASL and the ADSL-Modem into the same subnet. That means a Client in the LAN could connect directly to the internet without passing the ASL.
    I would recommend you to dial-in using the ASL directly. You do not need an additional modem. ASL is able to dial-in via ADSL by default.

    If you would like to use the ADSL-Modem I recommend you to setup a separate transfert-subnet for traffic between Modem and ASL. Put all your Local-Networks behind the ASL.

    Yes, that's exactly what I will create :

    ISP -----(adsl) MODEM(eth)----(eth1) ASL(eth0) ---- HUB ---- LAN

    But then, what should I configure in the modem side? Because currently it does all of the work (dialing, nat) using PPPoA VC-Mux.

    Could you please help me with IP addressing ? Here is my plan:

    Modem(eth) = 192.168.1.1/24
    ASL(eth1) = 192.168.1.2/24
    ASL(eth0) =  10.0.0.128/8

    Modem(adsl) will have the public static IP given by the ISP.

    This case, if the modem is the dialer.

    But then I dont understand how can ASL take over as the dialer. Which interface will get the public static IP ?

    Hmm I would make a DNAT on the MODEM that redirects all packets to the ASL. By doing this every packet that goes to the public-ip-adress is routed to the ASL. There you could make some DNAT or whatever.

    ASL can establish a ADSL-connection by itself. By doing this, you will have a public interface with the public ip on the ASL. Every public packet would be routed to the ASL directly. You would not need a DNAT on a modem.
