Kinds of ADSL connections?

Apparently there are some variants o (A)DSL services judging by the posts I've read here. And see I thought you just connected your PC to your ADSL modem, set the IP stuff to DHCP and logged on using a webpage/some utility and thats that. Firewall optional. Happy Internet surfing.

Seems that some are using a "kludge" of running PPTP over their Ethernet card, what is that and are there many other "weird" ways of using ADSL?

Anyone care to elaborate on this matter?

    dsl itself is standard that simply refers to the signaling over the copper lines..where it gets weird is the implementation of hte data backend(ip transport..client authentication..etc) and those vary widely..in a nutshell DSL is DSL it is the backend that usually creates the problems.

    The DSL that you're thinking of is PPPoE, or Point-to-Point Protocol over Ethernet.  It requires you to connect to the servers every time, much like you would on a PPP dial-up connection.

    The only reason I can think of doing this for is to reduce the number of IPs an ISP has to lease (Because, theoretically, not everyone will be on at the same time).  I can't think of any other reasons, though - there's nothing else that could possibly recommend it.  I have it (Switching to cable soon), and it's an absolute nightmare!

    PPPOE is implemented since dsl is over phone lines to the CO and the CO's have RADIUS authentication srvers already installed the providers wanted to use this base infrastructure and cause minimal disruptions..aka once they had built a user database or they were familiar with RADIUS they wanted to keep using it.
