Active IPs ?

Hi!

When AST is registered for 10 active IPs - is that cuncurrent IPs using the firewall, or is it the total number of IPs allowed on thel LAN? (I guess it's the first one, but just to be sure).

    In terms of what's presently enforced, the #IPs using the firewall; in terms of what the license states, the #IPs protected.

    [Checkpoint, on the other hand, scans your internal network for nodes and shuts down when it sees too many]

    The thinking is: if the firewall is protecting that node, shouldn't we be able to charge for it??

    That's probably depending on how one look at things.

    Initially I don't se why a PC-based FW should be different from a hardbox.

    Furthermore, I do have a problem if I have to pay extra to get my 3 printservers, my incomming telephone call logger and my home intertainmentbox "protected", just to mention something. I also would have a problem in understanding why I should pay extra because I have 3 single printservers (using 3 IPs) in stead of one printserver which could serv 3 printers.

    If you would want to do a workaround, I guess you could just put a 40 Euro NAT-box behind the AST-box, and thereby only one IP (techically) would be protected by the FW ;-(

    In my oppinion the weak point about AST is the licensing politics. Here at my private home we are 6 users. Just for the fun of it, each of us have our own domain and using these domains for mail as well (though served by one public IP and one server). Because we thereby have 6 mailadresses on the SMTP-server, a license for AST would be extreemely expensive - or we could choose not to use the SMTP-proxy, which on the other hand would be one of the reasons for buying AST in the first place..

    Also, because I like to be able to control the 4 kids' use of the net, I have 2 internal networks. Because of that, I can't have a DMZ for the server whithout paying as if I were a major compagny, since the NICs would exced 3.

    All in all I find theese kind of restrictions annoying.

    I can use another FW, you may say. Sure I can, but I like AST.

    You're right about the NAT box; and that's exactly what many people do (especially with Checkpoint!! PIX+Checkpoint had been a popular combo in the late 90s).

    My experience is with commercial operations; as far as what I hear, Astaro's home licensing is quite liberal. But I will defer to other posters on that at this point...
