Hardware questions

Hello everyone.

Astaro looks like the perfect solution for me, so in the next few months I am going to be building a system that I can use at home for all of my advanced Firewall and VPN needs. Based on my experiences I would like to design a 1U rack system that has as little moving parts as possible, which brings me to my specific questions:

- Would I be able to install it on a static memory based disk -- like a huge compact flash with a ATA bridge -- if I wanted to?
- What is the full install size of Astaro?

The system specifications say 8 gigabytes, but I doubt that is the real amount necessary to run the system. I'd much rather have as little as possible running the system off of some sort of static memory. All log files would be sent via one of any services to a different system.

    That's interesting. Try it. And post your experience.

    I tested it with a ASL in a VMware. More than 1.7GB Harddisksize and the ASL-Setup didn't complain any more.

    I plan on getting this to work, as soon as I have the money to build the system. The benefits of using a solid state storage device are so obvious. Compact Flash has a life expectency of 10 years. I'd like as little hardware related downtime as possible.

    So I'd have to go with a 2 GB memory device to even get it to install? Does it force a certain size?

    My current space that is used on the hdd is 1408mb. 2gb should be fine i'd guess, especially if you send the logs to another machine.

    While the acutall installation takes just 1.7 or so GB like Xeno said, you will want a bit more than that for Cache, Log Files, Proxies etc...8 Gig is a recommended minimum to provide enough space for these types of features, you can get by with less of course, (I've installed on a llittle 3 gig in the past) however performance will be hampered.
