Strange HDD behaviour

Hi there.
I noticed some strange sounds coming from my server:
exactly every five seconds, ASL (4.009) does something
on my harddisk. I don't know, what it is doing but it is not syslog.
is this normal, or what is he doing all the time?

    do you really don't know what ASL is doing ?????

    btw: I think it has something to do with ipaccd, if i kill the process, the hdd access seems to stop.
    what is ipaccd ?

    think it is generating logs - check the big logs in the logfile section.

    Reasons could be
    - heavy traffic filtered -> packetfilter log
    - misconfigured DNS or DNS proxy -> errors should appear in the daemon log

    it is not the packet filter, because i don't have any violations in syslog (using kiwi syslog daemon) and the DNS proxy is working fine.
    I really think it has something to do with this "ipaccd". What does this program do?

    It is not ipaccd. It has something to do with the mdw_deamon.pl. the progress is stopped, the acces on my
    hdd stops too.
    Is there something in the middleware that could cause these
    hdd accesses?


    The strange thing is, that it is *exactly* every 5 seconds.
    I could adjust my clock after that !

    That is because the middleware (among other things) checks regularly if any configuration files have changed, so that you have the convenience to modifiy those files directly (and not only via WebAdmin).

    Isn't there any way to change the frequency of the checks ?
    I don't modyify the files every 5 seconds.
    It would be enough to check every 10 Minutes or so.
    (Even that would be too often...)

    It is not that easy. As I said, the configuration file checking is only one thing among others. Besides that, you are not the only process which could change files ...
    Where is the problem with that checking? Do you have to position the heads on your harddisk with muscle power? :-)

       Well it is not that hard...
    but it is quite annoying hearing this frequent sound every five seconds, because the server is in a room next to mine, and its hdds are not the quietest...
