Just a quick query here.
At the moment my work has got Checkpoint's FW-1 Enterprise version 4.1 installed, without a VPN module installed. We're looking at adding VPN in place of our current RAS dial in unit (Roughly around 15 - 20 users at a time max).
At the moment I'm very unsure of Checkpoint's pricing of it's VPN module (Trying to find a sensible quote, or even a description from a re-seller, as to which VPN module I need is a nightmare. I'm waiting on our customer services dept. getting back to me on a pricing for it, if I can get one at all!), and I'm looking at Astaro as a seperate firewall purely for the VPN aspect. What I need to know is how Astaro checks how many users it has next to it's users allowed in the licence.
In the case of Checkpoint, it searched out every nook and cranny in your network to gleefully inform you that you were over your licence limit (I've used Checkpoint FW-1 50 user gateways at external sites, where there's only, say,46 PCs, but the managed hubs, etc shoved it past CP's 50 user limit, thus the wails of dispair from the software).
Does Astaro do the same as this? What I'm looking to do is allow VPN access into our 12 terminal servers from the outside, from around 15 users maximum at one time. I'm not looking to share anything else. Just those 12 internal servers, from a range of more than 600+ computers that sits in our internal network. Do I need an unlimited licence, or can I buy a 25 user pack and be happy with it?
Lastly, just in case anyone's wondering, we have one router that has five net facing IP's sitting on it, with only three in use at the moment, so if need be, I can siphon off a connection from the router and share the Astaro firewall on a seperate, spare, net facing IP, and use that as the VPN server, leaving the Checkpoint FW-1 server to plod along as normal.
