what does SYN mean

Hi,

I am trying to connect to an irc server using bersirc but keep getting "socket is not connected" message back.  Examined my asl and when trying to connect it says SYN under the TCP-Flags/ column. For my specific workstation I have all ports for all networks open.

can anyone assist.

    I'm not shure, but I think it means the SYN Flood Protection. 

    A SYN-flood attack is a denial-of-service attack where the attacker send a huge amount of please-start-a-connection packets and then nothing else.

    you took a look at your ASL, at your Packet Filter Livelog? Or where did you look, and what exactly was the output?

    A SYN packet (a tcp packet with the syn flag set, to be precise), is used for initiating a tcp connection. If your workstation wants to connect to an irc server, it sends it tcp syn packet to the irc server, most likely to port 6666-6669 (because those are commonly used irc server ports). If you want to enable IRC for your internal hosts, you have to add a network definition for your IRC server (e.g. name of the server, ip address and subnet mask /32), add a packet filter rule like    allow, and that's it.

    Hi Andreas,

    I have the following set up.

    a network definition of 

    Name: pc1
    IP Addr: x.x.x.x (IP addr on internal network)
    Subnet: 255.255.255.255

    a packet filter rule of 

    From: pc1
    Service: Any
    To: Any
    Action: Allow

    but I still can not connect to any IRC servers on the net.  Also I dont want to connect to just 1 specific IRC but variable ones.

    Any further assistance much appreciated.

    Hi,

    did you configure NAT (Network Address Translation) for your internal PC? What you need is SNAT, a rule which rewrites every packet which arrives from your internal host (Source IP: pc1) to a source ip which matches the external interface of your ASL.
    The second point: maybe your IRC Server requires an ident (the server tries to connect back to the IP it got a connection request from). Take a look at Proxies:Ident Relay.

    have you set up a NAT-Rule to masquerade your Host PC?

    If not and if you don´t have official IP-Adresses within your network you will not be able to get a connection!
