Backup/restore/ghost

Not sure, but reinstalling and loading a backup file I bet is not much slower than restoring from a ghost image and uses a much smaller backup file.

The only data you loose in this method is your log data and of course any http cache. Log data maybe an issue for you but you could manually back that data up if you really really wanted it.

Well, it is not the speed, I am interested in. This ASL is for a client, and in case this box "fucks up", this client could simply just insert a net boot disk which would automatically restore the ASL image without user intervention. It is more easy for him rather than to call me.

So... this is not possible?

I've never succeeded ghosting an Astaro box.
Ghost seems to want to grow the partitions whatever way you do it (including taking the steps in the Ghost KB to prevent this from happening).  Also, since it doesn't understand Rieser FS it can't ignore free space, so the imaging process is long and the resulting image large.
It would be great if it did work, then we could maintain an image that can be burned onto a standby box and be up and running in one simple step (insert boot CD and restart), including all and any tweaks made to the system, or take a backup prior to making config changes that may cause a 'wobble'.  
Maybe some other imaging system might work though.

You know I just had a thought and maybe the guys at Astaro could help guys like you out.  If they could make away for you to make a custom install disk that basically uses a config backup file.  Then once you have the customers firewall setup save the backup file and place it in a proper location to be burned with the Astaro install.  Then to recover just place the custom install CD in and let it run, it can take care of everything.

Seems the only thing Astaro would need to do is tweak the installation code a little bit, and provide a simple manner for us to introduce the config file.

Just a thought.  If enough people have a need for this, maybe they may add this feature.

Ghost will only work if you use the " -ia " switch,
the imagefile will be as large as the harddrive but it will work, even if you switch hardrive so the new disk is larger then the old one, Ghost won't try to expand the partitions.

When you are saying, that Ghost will work with the -ia switch, are you then saying that a restored ghost image will boot the firewall normally... without any bootdisk and as if nothing had happend?

What version of Ghost have you done this with ?

It's never worked for me.  Ghost always grows each partition by 1 (something) and takes the lost space away from the last partition.

I've tried repeatedly restoring to both the same system and several other identical ones without success.  

While reinstalling and reloading a config backup may be quicker it won't restore additions such as a UPS monitor and Dynamic DNS updater, hence the desire to restore this way.
