strange things

Hi all:

I have running asl 3.x My box is Pentium processor 400 Mh with 128 Mb. In the reports I can see that the memory always is in 75%. When I use the GUI memory goes down to 50%. Why? Normaly the system have minor activity when nobody use the GUI. Why the system use more memory when there isn't activity?

    I would worry more about the disk swapping going on during normal everyday use. Disk swapping will slow your firewall down, so you want to keep the swapping to a minimum. I have a PIII 550Mhz box, 6.4GB HD and three NIC's. I have the HTTP proxy, DNS cache server, accounting enabled, PPTP VPN, MASQ enabled, and about 20 rules. I have found that 384MB of memory works out very well. I don't get any swapping at all and thats with 5 PC connected to the internal network. I got to the 384MB by atarting at 128 and adding memory until no swapping ocurred for a period of two weeks.

    I don't have swap problems because I have a little enviroment (web and mail server in dmz and two computers in internal network). I was surprised that when no activity the memory rise to 75% and when I login to GUI the memory goes down to 50%. Four days ago the memory rise to 75% and I can't connect to the GUI. All was working (packet forwarding, rules, all...) but can't connect to GUI. When I reboot a system, no messages was stored in logs (kernel, daemon...) When I say no messages is no messages. The log was not working since de system crashed. After reboot all goes right.
