How many computers do you have on your home network ?

What do you mean, not older than 3 years!!!

I have a 486/25 running Debian Linux that is my SSH tunnel server.  It does a nice job, thank you.  It could also run my DNS if I were so inclined.

I do plan on decommisioning this box if I can ever get my firewall to handle SSH tunnel endpoints.

ok, lets make it "not older that 10 years and regularly used".

I just didn't want people to count in their various non-used vintage PC parts.

Boy you guys got me beat, and I've been 
lucky...

2 Full height, glass door enclosed 19"
racks with 2 APC 1400 3Us, netgear rackmount
hubs, various old PCs built out into 4Us,
plenty of keyboard shelves and other stuff.

Various computers, all now in 4Us, from a 
P166 oldy but goody to a rare old completely
scsi-based Gateway (PII 333Mhz), one old sparc,
other mid-rangers totalling about 8 (two ain't
working right now, though), plus a desktop
high-end gaming PC, plus a nice P4 2.0 ghz
laptop for work.  

I coulda had as many old mac 6100s as I could
ever want but passed on the chance.  would
have made perfect dns/smtp/misc. little
servers with openbsd.  Sigh.  Of course, who
makes a KVM for MACs?  Don't know.  Shouldn't
complain:  the racks and the 4U cases were
free.  

Wish list:  Rose sparc/PC KVM and all cables.
16 port or more.  (I can dream, right?)
Internal a/c unit too (the racks are a pair - 
meant to be bolted together for internal cooling.
Er, and wireless would be nice for the laptop.

Between myself and my 3 roommates we have 30+ machines (active duty).  These range from 486/66 named servers to high-end proliant and lx netservers.  All connected to a layer3 atm switch (96 10/100 ports + 4 OC-12 ports)

Right now an electrician is dropping a dedicated 100amp drop into our server room -- we decided to put in ups's for all server class boxes ;-)

Power bill is already over $500/mo (and rising  [;)]th the boxes soon.... (nah!)

Now, if I can only get Astaro to start giving out personal enterprise licenses for 3.x so we can do high-availability and support all of the 7 vlans in the house...

OK. Here goes:

1 server:  Dual P3 800Mhz, 2GB RAM, 18GB RAID1 + 288GB RAID5, DVD, Tape 
running Win2K Adv. server, AD, SQL, Exch2K and FTP

2 Desktops:  P3 1Ghz, 512MB RAM, 2x45GB HD, DVD, 1 w/Creative Ti 4600 the other w/ATI 9700PRO  running WinXP

1 Desktop:  P2 450Mhz, 320MB RAM, 2x20 GB HD, DVD + Burner  running Win2K

1 server:  P2 450 Mhz, 1GB RAM, 9GB RAID1 + 36GB RAID5, DVD  for testing

1 desktop:  P200MMX, 128MB RAM, 1x10GB HD, DVD  for testing

2 laptops:  1 IBM X20  and  1 DELL Latitude C610 running WinXP

And last but not least 1 desktop:  P200MMX, 128MB RAM, 3.2GB HD, 3xNIC running  Astaro 3.xx without problems (running for 47 days)     [:)]    

So - as you see - a new licence is soon needed...

Wow and I thought I was nuts!

I have 
3 P3-1.2G servers (Exchange/DC/BDC)
2 P1-200 machines, The kids and the wife
3 1.5Kva backup units for the above
1 Quad 500 Zeon server that runs Redhat 8.0
1 Quad 200 Pent Pro server that is for testing development.
3 laptops, Come on I like to watch TV while I work.
And 1 53 Flat Panel HDTV with 1.8G whitebox that serves as a media center for my living room.

The two Quad boxes run on a 5Kva UPS from Libert. I cross the limit for load, now I have two LED's lit. Dammit that's 5.6 minutes of power lost.

Well, I really loved this thread!

I showed it to my wife to prove to her having 8 plus machines in our living room is not abnormal, and she is not the only woman on earth that is tormented with the constant hum of PC's, network equip, and the like.

Hi all, I'm new to the ASL scene and I'm working on a growing family of 4 young childen and one on the way so it looks like I'm going to eventually have a larger network here.    I used to be a computer professional but found more money in Industrial Maintenance but I'm trying to keep up with it.   

Right now I have:

My Athlon 1800+ box (Win 2000)
Spouse's K6-3 400Mhz (Win 98SE)
Kid's K6-2 400 Mhz (being rebuilt)
Router K6-2 500 Mhz (ASL)
Print Server K6-2 300 Mhz (being built)

I'm on a 1 way cable modem until RCN updates this area with 2 way. I will say I'm glad that ASL can handle the IP changes that happen with the cable modem as it dynamically connects.

Red Man, what do you think of your 3Com 3300 Switch? I have the possibility of getting 1 or 2 24 port ones cheap here since right now I am using an off-brand 8 port Link-Max. I use 3Com cards for the inside network and was wondering if i could get any benefit out of one. Or is there others (Cisco?) I should be out gunning for?

I might set up a workgroup or domain server on the printer server if ASL takes a while with that. 

I've got an old victorian style house with a front parlor I've turned into a computer room so it keeps the front of the house warm.  [:)]

I really enjoy the 3300 switches. I now have the 3900 series here as well, an some more Cisco. The Cisco 2924XL-EN is my favorite Cisco switch for home/SOHO use.

I'll also vouch for the superstack II 3300.. they're really nice.

Wow I see this is a power users tool. I started with Smoothwall, moved to IpCop and now Astaro. I am setting it up for the biz I work for to evaluate for the network. At home I have the following:
