Good Product, Bad Sales

Well I really hope there is someone from astaro monitoring this board.  You have alienated many of your customers and potential customers.  I must admit I have not paid for Astaro, I am a home user.  I have though recommended the product to everyone I know and tested the producted for you.  I think it is one of the best firewall products avaibable.  However several things you have done today to upset your users.

1.  Change the licenses without prior notice.
2.  Vague and inconsistent decriptions of the different licenses and PRICING.
3.  Lack of flexibility in the packages

It almost appears that your product has recently went from being run by the developers to being run by the Marketing dept.  If this is true that is truly sad, and you have lost me as a customer.  I understand in order to stay in Businness you need to sell products.  Many home users out there I think would be glad to pay a reasonable fee to use the product if it does what they need it to do.  However remember these home users do not have the pockets to spend huge amounts of money, but do tend to provide you with free advertisment and testing.  I know your target aduience is not the home user, however your home users are mostly composed of Geeks who work in the IT field and many of which recommened the product to their customers.  I will not recommend a product I am not familiar with.

If anyone else has any other complaints about ASL's recent events please add them to this thread.

    The thing I never understood is *why* it costs more for more IPs with this product? 

    I can understand the hardware appliance firewall seller charging more for the 1000 user pro version rather than the 25 user SOHO version because the hardware needs to be better to cope
    so you buy a higher spec model.

    I can even vaguely understand smaller incremental IP models with hardware appliances because the manufacturer has to recoup the cost of the hardware.

    But with Astaro we buy the hardware. And basically what the firewall part of Astaro is, fantastic as it is, is just linux tools freely
    available, but Astaro has done amazing things creating a user friendly and comprehensive management interface for all those tools. Yes there are commercial add ons integrated in Astaro but you have to pay extra for those anyway.

    So I still believe that the model should be:

    Basic Firewall:

    Options:
    Home User AV/license

    Business User AV licences (per X users)
    VPN Extras (per X users)
    Browser Filter (per X users)
    Failover Option
    QOS Option

    I think this model would appeal to all, existing 2.x users have a clear upgrade path, new users can decide what features they want, same for resellers. It allows Astaro to drop the price of the basic firewall making it available to a larger audience of customers and to manage their programming resources when they know what things sell better than others.

    I love ASL, I have been using it for over 12 months. You can find a lot of my posts in the archive section that has just been taken off line. I have spent hours proof reading the English and German versions of the manual (despite knowing zero german). I have offered free technical support to a number of people in this forum, and over the phone.

    I have hacked PPP dialup, SARG and others, and posted information about it. I have found bugs, and quietly reported them and got them fixed. I think I have been giving back to Astaro more than I have got from them.

    More importantly I am an IT professional and I have recomended ASL to many people, which have turned into sales. It is the IT professional at home that recomends a product that can lead to lots of sales. 

    IP Professionals at home want to test things, play and work out how things work. They will have lots of machines lying around. They may have more than the 3 interfaces - I have. I have Internal, External, DMZ and Wireless. I have never used VPN, but I can see a point where I might set up a few VPN connections.

    I host a few WWW sites - for non-profit companies and organisations - Junior Football clubs and the like - and do this for free. Now I can do this, but not with EMAIL addresses. 

    There are only two people in the house at home, and although I do run a small business from there part time, my use of ASL is mostly for home use.

    I want high availability... Cheap machines are better than servers when there are a couple of them... My Linux boxes are in a two element HA array. It will be nice to have the ASL the same.

    I want to support Astaro financially. But I want to do it on fair and equitable terms. My needs for a license include

         4 physical interfaces

    I fully agree with Darryl on the parts above. I am an IT Professional. I admit I have over one dozen PC's in my basement. 

    Had it not been for my playing with Astaro at home, and playing with ALL the features (except virus-scanning) at home, I was able to recommend Astaro to my employer as our replacement firewall for our office.

    This in turn resulted in one rather large sale for Astaro, as we purchased what is now called an Enterprise License.

    Now I am to assume that I will not be able to play with the features I have been looking forward to for a long time? That just sucks.

    I have no need for more than say 5 IPSEC tunnels. I would like more than 2 or 5 Domain SMTP Proxy. I want to play with the HA stuff so I can push my employer to get that.

    I was going to upgrade my system at home (which I know Astaro didn't make any money from) and the one at my office (which we paid quite nicely for) to version 3.2 . But now I am not so sure.

    Ok so I installed it in VirtualPC, not wanting to use up a PC yet. With a home, or even an Enterprise license you can not access HA, Load Balancing, and it says I am restricted to 3 network interfaces and 10 protected IP's. And that is with the "Enterprise" License.

    Astaro I am not meaning to bash on you, but this is going to drive me crazy.

    I so badly want to start playing with the new version, but sitting on my machine at home and not being able to access HA, Load Balancing to play with to know if we could use it at work or if it is a function we don't need, will drive me insane.

    You could have at least followed suit from the 2.x version and just blocked out those items such as surf protection and antivirus.

    Sorry Astaro Guys, I did forget to say though that I love the new interface. Great job on that. Just bad job on the pricing/licensing model for home users.

    I too been using ASL for a while reported a few minor bugs and have helped some new ppl on the forums and offline.  I too have recommended the product to SEVERAL buyers.   

    To kinda speak up for Astaro is the fact that they are still in Beta and they have been adding a LOT more features then they planned too.  I think this effects everything, including pricing.

    I to have to agree that I feel that Astaro isn't open to the community.   but MOST companies aren't.  I can say the BEST community supporter is BioWare.   And there sales show it also.   They have ppl hired just to monitor the boards and respond to just about every subject.  I do suggest that Astaro do this if they plan to REALLY sell there product.

    I agree with all you. I'm also an IT-er. Testing ASL from nov. 2001 . Delivered several bug-reports and recommended to several companies !!!
    It's sad.
