I think that is what is patently obvious is that we all have different setups, and we all need flexibility and more importantly upgradeability in the products we buy either for ourselves or for work.

So I think that a core firewall product (limited IPs or not) then all the other "bits" extra. 

Especially VPN, hardly any home users are going to mess around with VPN, same goes for small 10 user offices. Yes there will be some who do thats why it becomes an *OPTION* 

Oh well, lets hope this thread catches someones attention, I've emailed basically what I said here to the sales rep I was speaking with.

Cant say i agree. I know of several home users that use vpn and more and more will as it becomes easier to set up and securing wireless wap's become a priority.

What they have done is a half arsed attempt and compartmentalising the product, but instead of doing it properly they have messed it up.

This is how I see it should be:

Astaro Base Product priced per IP (if the *HAVE* to)includes: 

Firewall
Application Gateway
QOS
Unlimited NICs
Unlimited E-Mail Domains

Home Options:
* AV Home Pack (10 Users? Not sure what it was b4)

Business Options:
* AV Packs (10, 25, 50, 100, 250, 500, unlimited)
* Surf Protection (10, 25, 50, 100, 250, 500, unlimited)
* VPN Packs (10, 25, 50, 100, 250, 500, unlimited)
* Load Balancing
* High Availability
* Gigabit NIC support

That way people can buy what they want. I still think that they are barking up the wrong tree with the per IP pricing for the basic firewall, but if thats the way they insist on playing it then I guess I can live with it.

Just a thought. Sales are you listening? Instead of making the whole licensing issue more restrictive you should make it more flexible!

I totally agree.  They need to allow purchasing of individual options.  The idea that we all fall into a general mold is ludicrous.  For my current HOME configuration in 2.x, I would be required to purchase Enterprise licensing for 3.x.  I have 14 statics, true this is a lot for home, but only 3 of them are used for any kind of perminate web service (www, ftp, smtp)  The rest of them are individual machines, and I have statics on them for testing purposes.  I can't justify spending that kind of money at home, just to learn with, and if I could I would get check point.  Come on Astaro, don't blow a good thing with the typical coorprate licensing greed.  PLEASE address this ASAP.  If you feel the same, LET THEM KNOW here is the sales number for thier US office. 1 781-229 5880 taken from thier own web site.  http://www.astaro.com/html/gb/contact.htm

There is just no way you can be required to pay AGAIN if you already own 2.X licenses and have a 2 year update that has not expired yet.

When they say you can protect 10 IP's, does that mean public IP's, private IP's, or both?  If I've got the firewall plus 10 machines at my location that means 1 machine will get screwed out of a connection?  Or is it that you can have 10 IP's bound to the interfaces in the firewall?  This licensing thing is wierd.  As an end-user v2 was cool.  But, you gotta make money somehow.

I believe that it means 10 IP's inside the network, not counting the IP of the internal NIC of Astaro. I don't know what happens if you have more than 10 whether it just stops working or whether its limits you to 10 simultaneous IPs accessing the internet through the firewall. I'd have to get a limited license and see what happened with more than X machines.
