ASL for non-commerical use question

Hi all,
This isn't really a technical question, so forgive me if this is the wrong place to post.

I'm curious what the "free" version of ASL offers. I would like to use it for a home network to replace a Smoothwall box. From what I have read, I can install it but will not have access to the up2date and virus features. Does anyone know if this correct and/or has anyone done this.

Is it worth it, for non-commercial use, or does this cripple things to much? US$400 is too much for a home network. Should I be looking elsewhere?

Your information is somewhat incorrect.

For home use, it has the same features as the purchased version, except for the antivirus.

Up2date is available. Everything is the same. However you get a "Unregistered" message when you login to the web console.

I believe you can purchase a personal antivirus license to let you make use of that feature for under 39.00 Euros

I too was using smoothwall. This is IMHO a much better product. You have alot more control over the firewall. It is however a steeper learning curve.

That's exactly what i was looking for! I just needed to be sure it was possible to get update patches ... I think the price for the anti-virus is good too.

I have been reading the docs before install and look forward to moving away form smoothwall.

I'm sure you will be seeing me here more often as I begin to tackle the learning curve!

Be aware that SmoothWall nativly supports a number of USB ADSL modems (Alcatel and the like), which are currently unsupported by ASL (and a good thing too, IMHO).

If you're using one of these, then ASL is not for you...

I took a sick day today and spent it installing ASL ... woah ... it is *much* more complicated than smoothwall. I really like it ... but it is gonna take some time to learn it ... i will probably by another box and try and get it to work there before replacing smoothwall. I'm thinking PII400 should be fine.

ASL is better than smoothwall ... just gotta spend some time to get it working!
