Packet Filtering / ADSL Connection - HELP PLEASE!!!!

ADSL 768/384 Line
Speed Stream 5250 modem
Netgear 8 port Switch.

External Nic: CAT5 goes directly into the dsl modem.
Internal Nic: CAT5 goes directly into the switch.

I have read in previous posts that people were using a crossover cable from the External Nic to the modem. Is this correct?

My problem is that I can access the internet by setting up my browser with the proxy IP and port 8080, but packet filtering does not work. Nor can I ping the external Nic or anything outside the internal network.

Here are my setting.

Networks:I added 192.168.2.0/24, 216.158.41.0/24, 216.158.41.52 and my mail server.

Proxies/Http: Enabled
Transparent: Disabled
Allowed Networks: Private 192.168.2.0/24

Proxies/DNS: Enabled
Interfaces to listen on: Internal Nic?
Allowed Networks: Private 192.168.2.0/24

Masquerading:Private 192.168.2.0/24 ----> Extern Nic

Packet Filtering:

From (Client): Private 192.168.2.0/24
Service: Any
To (Server): Any
Action: Allow

    please excuse my question but have you set a default route (to the internal address of the ASL box) in your PC?

    What do you mean by default route?

    I have setup my nic card with an ip-192.168.1.200 and subnet-255.255.255.0 (Nothing Else)

    I have setup my broswer, IE 5.5, with proxy settings 192.168.1.100 (internal Nic) with port 8080 (Nothing Else).

    I can surf the web, but I cant use any services like smtp, pop3, ftp, etc...

    Hi Chris,

    the default route tells your PC where to send IP packets for destinations that are not covered by other entries in the routing table.

    For more information on routing have a look at (for example):

    In Windows you can setup your ASL Box as your default gateway by entering the TCP/IP configuration (where you setup your IP 192.168.1.200). Hit the 'Advanced' button, in the next window you have to add an entry for 'Standard Gateway' (in your case 192.168.1.100). Alternatively you could open a shell (DOS box) and type "route -p add 0.0.0.0 mask 0.0.0.0 192.168.1.100" (without the "").

    I solved my issue after three long hard weeks of troubleshooting.  All I did was set the internal Nic as the default gateway and DNS in the Lan settings for the client workstation and everything works great.

    Now I am going to set this up here at work.
