External Nic Issues

i installed astaro 2.019 and it works fine ... except after i have left it alone and not used any of my masq'd machines for some time, the external nic seems to "die"  it quits accepting icmp, i can't hit the webadmin, etc.  but once i get home and use a masq'd machine to ping the internal ip of the asl box all works again and the external ip once again becomes active.  thoughts?  i looked in the bios and checked to see if there were any timeouts or anything like that, but no luck.  what am i missing? the  nics are both 3com 905C cards.  THANKS
