No Accounting on high traffic load

Somehow my line got a heavy loading (mrtg tells me about 6.8 MBit/s). At the same time the ASL had a CPU utilization of 100% (PIII 800, 512 MB Ram). My problem is, that the accounting didnt collect the data for this time. Bad for me, I cant take a look who cause the high traffic  [:(]

Even the file net-acct.020104_1130.gz is bigger and includes some data from the accounting before, it does not include everything. First entry in this file is "Fri Jan  4 12:15:39 2002".

Is there anything I can do to make sure every data will be collected?
