HELP! Click of death

I'm stumped.

Shortly after boot, the harddrive of the firewall begins clicking- a few seconds after the clicking begins, the root login dies (frozen console), and all functions stop- but the clicking continues.

I can boot it to init level 3- None of the mounted filesystems report over 50% used, and I can't see anything in any log which looks out of place. 

What can I do?

    I'd say you have a bad sector right where mdw or one of the config files is located.  If you have a simple setup or recent backup I'd suggest formatting the drive with DOS to check for bad sectors.  Might be time for a new hard drive.

    Yeah sounds like a bad hard drive.   I bet its a older model Western Digital you have no idea how many of those drives I gone through with the infamous click of death 

    Test it in another comp do a full surface scan for bad sectors
