the free download version

How is the software crippled in the free version?
I am wanting to try astaro but need to know the latter. I have a small-midsize home network that supports 4 users and my home business. I am planning on adding 3 business partners that will share the network. 2 will share via vpn if we can get a solution and the other will be local. Some software that you can download for free limit the amount of host that can connect at one time. i will have several users and 4-5 servers in the dmz that will go through astro and one on the local lan. I want to add the 2 remote users via IPSEC VPN or PPTP. They will be using win-xp i am sure the ms.pptp client will work but is there a ipsec client they can use. this is assuming i can use the vpn on the download ver. Can i use a Radius to store vpn accounts? Can you add software to the system like qmail, ping proxy, sql etc....?

ps. I dont know if it makes a difference but the business we have is non-profit charity.

    Hi Easy! :-)

    It is possible to split the GNU GPL part of Astaro and the middleware that Astaro creates - but I would not recommend to!! You will loose alot of lifesaving help this way. 
    Astaro differs in commercial and non-commercial - so from what you are saying - you are free to use the full version as a non-commercial user (but I'll let them correct me on that if I'm wrong  [:)] 
    You can use both RADIUS and Microsoft authentication, IPSEC and PPTP. 
    There is no easy way to add software and services to Astaro, but then again - it shouldn't - it's a firewall.
    You may like to hear though, that it's already got a qmail smtp proxy with the option of virus scanning mail in the proxy (non-profit users must pay annual license fee for the signature updates).
    Also, I think it has a ping proxy alread - unless you are talking something totally different from what I mean.

    I would download it and test it. It has many features you'd love, and next version (which is in beta now) will have snort IDS and alot more improvements.

    I'm a home user myself - and I've got 5 pc's on a NAT network. Astaro is way more technical and advanced than any other open source linux distribution firewall I've seen.
    Of course - it is payware for companies - but as long as I'm in the non-commercial arena - I don't care too much  :-)
