Run away processes

For some strange reason the snmpd daemon went haywire on my firewall tonight eating up 95%+ of CPU.  I killed the process and it restarted itself and immediately went back up to 95%+.

So, I did a reboot and it went back down to normal..  What would cause this to happen?

    Hi Greg, hi spid3r,

    could you please provide some more details.

    Do you have heavy traffic through the firewall?
    Is the problem reproducable, after reboot?
    What kind of hardware do you use?
    Do you use HTTP proxy?

    MRTG gets started every 5 min. with cron.
    It is based in /var/chroot-snmp.mrtg, the config
    file can be found in its etc directory.

    I don't have the same problem as Greg, my snmpd does not run away.  It simply gets restarted after which only some of the MRTG charts stop updating.

    The problem has not happened again..

    But to answer your questions...

    Light traffic load..  Home usage.

    Problem not reproducable, at least so far.

    Hardware is a PII 350, Asus P2B MB, 6GB EIDE, 128MB SDRAM, 2 3Com 905C NICs

    HTTP Proxy is off.
