Hostnames

Hi

You can add Network and Services to your ASL, but if you have a network with some routers behind, it would be better if you identify the routers by hostnames and not by networknames... any possibility to do this?

    I have one router behind ASL which is handling my wireless network. I don't see your point though.

    Why is it better to identify the routers and not the networks?

    To route to the wireless network, I define the network like this:
    Wireless Net 192.168.200.0 255.255.255.0 

    Then I add a Static IP route (in the Network-Routing menu):
    Wireless Net -> 192.168.199.2  
    (where the this ip of course is the gateway to the wireless net)

    If there is a "higher meaning" with identifying the hostnames instead of the network, I'm more than willing to listen to anyones explanation :-)

    IF you want to identify a host though, you can just use this type of entry in the definitions:
    Wireless GW  192.168.199.2 255.255.255.255

    This entry identifies the wireless gateway as a single host.

    I hope I'm not just laying a smoke screen over your question :-)

    ok, than let's see what the problem is...

    the problem is, that we have a backbone-subnet (254 clients, some are routers for other subnets, some server, etc.). for each of this server/client/router i want access-policities. of course, i can make a network with a 255.255.255.255 subnet mask, but wouldnt it be better for overview and monitoring etc. if the hosts are in a host list rather than in a network list?

    Markus, I think I see your point. However, if you follow a strict naming convention for hosts and networks, I'd say you could get a pretty good overview too don't you think?

    I have named all my nic's NIC, all networks NET and all hosts HOST.
    If you wanted, you could name all gateways GW, ROUTER or GW ...

    Perhaps not your preferred solution though, but it works for my little lan :-).
