Downloading ASL ISO Image

Could it be that your web browser has the .gz extension assiated to an app so that it automatically runs gunzip (or whatever) whene you download a .gz file?

Try right mouse clicking on the .gz file and using save as and see what happens.

no absolutely not. The download becomes a 150mb download. It takes three times longer than initially estimated. As I said its as if the serving host is decompressing as it sends.

Carly, its not even in a .gz file.  Its simply named .gz   just rename it from .gz to .iso and burn it to CD.

I have had the same problem, and in fact was not able to use the file (it didn't seem to be an ISO).

I was able to use WGET on a linux box to download.

This has been an ongoing problem.

Here's 2 ideas on what I think the problem is and how it can be resolved..

1] For one, IE doesn't understand filenames with more than one "." in it very well. When I downloaded it, it actually came out all messed up and I had to go into dos, rename it to asl.gz

2] IE's got some weird problem with .gz..I think it tries decompressing it but can't, so it will sit there and try to download for a long time after it's 99% done. 

Resolution:

ASL needs to rename the file to something like ASL20.zip or just provide the iso..Personally, I wouldn't ever attempt to download a 61MB file with a modem...But with DSL, 61MB or 150MB, it doesn't really matter to me..

or....

If they don't want to make any changes here's how you can download and fix it..

download the file with an ftp client ( and not IE's built-in explorer ftp crap )
rename it to: asl.gz while in a dos shell
extract the asl.gz with WinRAR or something like that ( WinRAR worked the best for me ). 

your .iso will pop out..now you can burn it.

okay well it seems like people are experiencing different problems and not quite understanding what I'm saying.

As stated, the file was not a .gz file, it was just named as such. Renaming the file from asl-2.0.iso.gz to asl-2.0.iso and then burning to CD works fine. However, the file is supposed to be 60mb or something. Now, here's what happens when I download the supposed 60mb file.

Downloading:

1mb of 60mb complete...
10mb of 60mb complete...
....
59mb of 60mb complete (99%)
60 mb of 60mb complete (100%)
61mb of 61mb complete (100%)
62mb of 62mb complete (100%)
63mb of 63mb complete (100%)
64mb of 64mb complete (100%)
....
151mb of 151mb complete (100%)... Finished

See how the file goes on and on beyond what IE expects it to be. Also the link on astaro.com does state "asl2.0.iso.gz : 61,261,104 bytes".

It looks like ProFTPD (The FTP server at ftp.astaro.com) is listing the file as being 61mb, but actually serving 150mb of uncompressed data. Which is why at first IE thinks its a 61mb file, but continues to receive data all the way up to 150mb (the size of the uncompressed file).

A quick 'ls -l' at ftp.astaro.com/pub does in fact show a 61mb file.

If IE was decompressing the file itself (as some have speculated, perhaps via a shell extension/plugin), then the download time would not be that of a 150mb file. So this cannot be the case.

The ftp server lists a 61mb gzipped file, but serves a 150mb ungzipped file. Surely it's a "feature" of ProFTPD.

As some have already said, this isn't really much of a problem since it just means waiting a little while longer and then removing the .gz extension. No problem.

Perhaps even more confusing (and more likely to make people think the download is not working), is the fact that some (older) versions of IE do not show the file growing as its being downloaded. The download window will stick at "60.9mb of 61mb" for a further hour until it finally finishes, leaving a 150mb file on the harddrive.

For example, I started downloading the asl-plus-pack just last night. It said "60mb of 79.8mb"... then it stuck at 99% ("79.7mb of 79.8mb") for another hour. When I went to have a look just now, the download had finished, and there was a 288mb asl-pluspack.tar.gz on the harddrive. This file would not open. Removing the .gz extension showed that the file was infact a non-compressed tar archive.

I think i'll go take a look on the ProFTPD mailing list if there is one. I'm sure thats where the answer lies.

Interesting fact to note. on-the-fly decompression of gzipped files is a feature of many FTP servers. Most except ProFTPD it seems.

Is your ftpd really ProFTPD or does it just pretend for security ?

Ok I removed the gzip encodings from apache.

I can't confirm the suspicion about proftpd, since wget retrieves a 60 meg file just fine.

is it possible that you are using an upstream proxy that is doing the decompression for you ???  I believe I have had this particular problem with squid.
