Hard drive failure

My friend's ASL box's HD died this weekend.

Commendably, ASL kept doing NAT, but mail proxy and webmin died.

Oddly, there were no messages on the console.
ISTM that it should have written something.

    that depends on the type of the HD death.

    write requests may be saved in buffers or the OS may not realize that the data is never actually written.

    If the device actually disconnects from the bus, the kernel will try to log the fault .. but also on disk  [;)]

    you can edit /etc/syslog.conf to redirect syslog output to tty's.
