Why is astaro not free?

It contains GPL code - part of the GPL license is that you may not charge for any software that incorporates code that has been released under GPL. (section 2b)

    I do not work for Astaro, so these comments are my own. You need to think of Astaro like any other distribution of linux. Some distributions come with commercial software with no source included (WordPerfect, etc)...

    The parts of ASTARO that are not under GPL DO NOT INCLUDE ANY GPL CODE. When they run they use GPL runtimes, but are not under GPL themselves.

    If Astaro had taked some GPL code, and included it in their software then they would be breaking the GPL. But they have not. Theu have created their own distribution of linux, and offer you that by itself. On top of that you may load their software. They have made this a one-step process so that you do not need two disks.

    The guys at Astaro really are committed to Open Source.

    Parts of our distribution are not free, and not derived from GPLed code.

    The sources of the proxies and kernel are available from the usual sources. We have made some very minor changes to some of the programs we use (e.g. PPTP daemon). I am preparing to publish these patches on docs.astaro.org. We have also contributed back a bit by publishing the kernel (netfilter) patch for our portscan detection.

    It is allowed to bundle GPL software with non-GPL software. RedHat, SuSE and most other linux distributors are doing this.
    During installation of ASL, you can select to install only the GPL parts, making it free.

    To make things clear: We do not sell GPL software, but we are bundling it with our own (and third party) software, creating a distribution with added value.

    Here is a short list of the main GPL blocks in Astaro Security Linux:
