UPS

Is anyone using a UPS in combination with software to provide a safe shutdown of the Astaro box in case of a power failure? 
Any suggestions on make/model for a cheap UPS that only needs to provided a few minutes power (the box is a basic simple pc) and than shut down the Astaro box?

    for APC ups try this http://www.apcupsd.org 
    on server with ups connected it's run as master, on other servers as slave

    There is a UPS HOWTO, but basically it tells you to waste a SERIAL port on the UPS. I have hacked up a PARALELL cable to do the same thing with a generic UPS, one that provides POWER BAD, and BATTERY ABOUT TO GO BAD relay contacts, and accepts a SHUTDOWN NOW signal from the computer. 

    Getting back to the subject, since modems are not really supported, the serial ports on most boxes are usually free, so the generic cables with generic UPS could easally be integrated.

    Would someone like to have a go at integrating? I just do not have the time at the moment to look at it for my own purposes... If we can get it running we might be able to get Astaro to add it to the WWW interface :-)

    since your postings are the only ones I found about this topic I´d like to ask if I have to expect some problems when trying to install teh APC ups software on ASL?

    In the past we had a power failure an after I restarted the ASL it didn´t right work anymore :-(

    To prevent this for the future I´d like to integrate the ASL in the UPS and install the software (slave I guess) that will receive the signal to shutdown.

    Any advice is welcome :-)
