CPU running at nearly 100%

Hi,

on our ASL we experience the following problem:

After running for one or two weeks with CPU at ~10% the CPU utilization goes up to 97%. A few days later the system crashes - no login, no ping, no reaction. 
After rebooting the system made some recoveries and checks and then ran at 10% again.

This time the CPU is running at nearly 100% from reboot. I think qmail and the virus scan are causing the CPU utlization.

    I think it relies on a mail delivery problem:

    I don't get any admin messages any more. Beside I can't tell what I've changed so that it doesn't work anymore?!

    Any ideas?

    Hi Jens,

    your prob looks like a wrong MX configuration in your dns.
    Whats the MX config for your domain and whats your smtp routing setup?

    MX-Record for Domain jam-gmbh.de and jamgmbh.de points to mail.jam-gmbh.de/ mail.jamgmbh.de --> 212.43.88.7

    How can I state the smtp-routing settings? Where do I have to configure them?

    Hi Jens,

    212.43.88.7 isnt your firewall... so you should change the mx record for your domains to the official ip of your firewall and change the mail server ip to a internal (eg.g 10.1.1.1) and add the your domains as "accepting domains" and add a SMTP routing entry for your doamins with destination ip of your internal mail server (like the above example 10.1.1.1).
    Now all incoming emails are going to the firewall, and the firewall smtp proxy directs the emails (after a virus check) to the internal mail server. Thats all.

    Hello Markus,

    I'm trying to setup the configuration like you told me. 
    What should I select as "Mail relay for"? Is it the Internet? Or only DMZ? We have a mailserver running within DMZ and a DNAT entry for service SMTP & POP from External (Internet) IP to DMZ (internal) IP.

    Hi Jens,

    Mail relay for are all networks are allowed to use the firewall as a relay - its a bad idea to add any here...

    In normal case there you should configure your local net and/or DMZ, or only the local mail server, if all clients using this mail server as relay (e.g. MS Exchange with MS Outlook clients).
