speed + cpu load

Howdy Ho,

I've just recently installed Astaro, and am using the WebAdmin to configure but am finding it painfully slow.   how slow?  painfully, cup of coffee for every click.  Also I am receiving CPU load messages quite frequently.

Anyone know what I should be doing to get the speed up....   System Follows.

P-Pro 266, 32MB, 2.4GB

I'm upgrading to 1.82 now, and will see how that goes.

    I think what you might experience is swapping. 32 MB of RAM is hardly the limit, so your harddisk's swap partition is used to store data that should be in RAM. Comparing 7-10 ns of access speed (RAM) to 7-10ms (HDD), you might get a grasp what makes you wait ...

    Think about upgrading RAM, that should be good for overall performance. Since RAM is pretty cheap these days, I would suppose to begin thinking at 128 Megs. Plenty of RAM does never hurt.

    I was just thinking that as I was getting my eine fixes..  I'm going to go up to 64MB tomorrow, and look at 128MB down the track.

    I have found that CPU helps a lot. 64 is just enough if you want to run SMTP and HTTP proxy, but a bit more is better.

    I am not sure what the BogoMIPS of your PPro is, but I am running on a NatSemi Geode running at about 280 BogoMIPS with 64 MBytes and was finding that the CPU was too high, and the system was unreliable.

    Turning off the proxy for HTTP and SMTP helped a lot, and the system is very stable. And it allows me to run the system in a 1U rack with no fan :-) Home brewed even.

    I have managed to run Astaro on 8 MBytes RAM, but it was not nice. It only JUST ran [Hey, the motherboard was bad. 64 MBytes RAM registered as 8, so it was not my fault - really].


    My immediate recomendation is to get another CPU. I think you will find that gives you better results than the memory. I think your motherboard will support a fast socket 7 processor. The PPro has a bogomips of about 1 * MHz of processor. The  AMD K5/K6/K6-2  has about 2 * MHz. Not quite double the speed, but you will go a lot faster.

    Thanks for the email re SMTP stuff, I'm getting into now.. but that's for a different post.

    I'm running at 532.48 BogoMIPS.  Hmm, must really find out what a bogo is. Anyways, I'm going up to 64MB today, will keep my performance increase in the public domain. :-)
