squid setup

pardon if this is a FAQ (I did look...)
I need to setup an FTP/WWW proxy where accesses from the outside to various internal services like ftp and www are authenticated. This seems to be the reverse of the proxy setup accessed from webadmin.  I think I need to use squid to set this up.  True?
I don't see much here on how to set this up.  Do I use the resources from the squid website and setup manually thru a login?

    Hi there...

    Commonly you would do this sort of thing on the machine with the WWW browser. There are a number of reasons.. One is that if you set a password to come in, then you can have them getting out if thet ever vist.

    Also, the passwords are sent plain text which is not really a good thing... The SQUID www site (www.squid-cache.org) will have some details on how to set this up... But it really is just a proxy.

    You really want to set your HTTP server up with the authentification. Of couse there are cases where this is not acceptable, but this is the way it should be done if possible. 

    Another good reason is that this sort of change will not be supported so any upgrade could blow away your changes without notice.
