Trying out Astaro

Hello to everyone.

     I was bored today and decided to download your distro.  I an getting 29.5KB/sec as I type this.  Right now, my gateway box is running win2k with Norton Firewall because I am a lazy ***.  Hopefully I will have Astaro up on a second partition ASAP.

     First Q:  Is there a difference in the download version and the purchace version?  If not, why is the online version called "Evaluation Version"?

     Second Q:  If I install the distro, I will need a document describing the kernel paramaters used to compile your kernel.  Is this documentation avalible?


Teh screenshots look really good.  I will have it up and running in about 5 hours, until then....Ciao.

    Q1.  There is no difference.  The "Evaluation" banner will be changed to something alon the lines of "Personal use" in the near future.  Personal use is free, commercial use requires licensing.

    Q2.  There is nothing to compile in ASL.  Everything is precompiled out of the "box".  Extremely easy install..

    Hi there,

    No, because you don't have the kernel sources or a compiler on your ASL boxx (leave alone those nifty tools you use when compiling a kernel). 

    This is a security feature!

    I just can't think why you would need a custom built kernel, because you will get new kernels that are specifically built for ASL (and therefore working right while not beeing a byte too big  [;)]th your Up2Dates.
    If, and only if you have a feature that makes sense and you really need it turned on, it wouldn't be the first time that we compile an extra kernel for our community members to download  [:)]
