SMTP Setup

This maybe silly, but please clarify. The SMTP proxy in asl is for mail incoming to a smtp mail server only, right? What about user email in/out (smtp/pop3)? Just open packet fileter holes for these?

  • Hi BrianJ,

local (internal) users can also use the SMTP proxy! It's the outgoing Email-Server, or relay for your internal email server.

Sorry there is no proxy for POP3, use socks or open a rules in the packetfilter.
  • Thanks, that makes sense now.

    A few questions still though:

-is there many email clients that support socks for pop3 ?

-how should our company scan incoming pop3 emails?

-the virus scanner then is only to check outgoing email, and can't touch incoming?
