Greetings, Astaro community! I am a confessed newbie to Astaro and, indeed, setting things such as this up in general, and I have a problem that I humbly request your assistance with. If any of these are dumb questions, please forgive me.
I am trying to set up my Astaro computer as a way to share a broadband (Cable) internet connection while using it as a firewall. The way I have it set up is cablemodem-astaro-hub. The hub is a Netgear EN104TP. My desired astaro computer is an old (3/96) Pentium-166 (AMIBIOS 1.00.01, 1992). The two PCI network cards are a Netgear FA310TX and a D-Link DFE-530TX (both of which I have tested and do work). I needed to make a boot disk to install astaro, and after that, the program seems like it recognized everything well and installs fine (or it seems to). I entered in the default IP addresses and masks in the install.
On the hub, the fourth port has a switch that allows you to hook the hub into other things, such as a cable modem or, in this case, the astaro computer.
The basic problem is that the astaro computer goes totally unrecognized by the other computers in the network. I can't ping it, I can't open the https page, etc. In fact, when setting the port on the hub to the proper setting, the hub acts as if nothing's attached at all- no lights, no action, no nothing (same results from the NIC). I've tried several different cables (including the one that worked with the hub in this configuration when connected directly to the cable modem), switching around NIC cards, installing with only one NIC card, etc., and nothing works.
I'm wondering if there is something obvious that I'm missing, perhaps configuring the cards or astaro improperly. I cannot log in as admin or lilo, only root and loginuser (is this a problem?). Also, upon rebooting, several things come up as "unclean," and the computer will reboot once or twice afterwards (at which time, everything will be "clean" again, and things proceed normally).
I guess what's bothering me the most is that the hub just does not seem to recognize the astaro computer when the hub is in uplink mode (when I switch it to have it act like it's "just another computer" in the network, it looks fine).
I don't know what else to try next, and am at a loss for why things don't work. Thanks in advance for whatever assistance anyone can provide. Much appreciated!
