UTM9 VM Spec and General Questions

Hi Everyone!

We have a Sophos UTM 9 VM with around 160 users. We are seeing quite a bit in terms of delays and freezes.

When I look at the VM itself (ESXi 6.7) running on the below

  • Model:PowerEdge R630
  • Processor Type:Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5-2630 v3 @ 2.40GHz
  • Logical Processors:32

We have given the VM 12 CPU (6 Cores per Sockets X2)
8GB RAM and 40GB HDD.

Am I specced right?

Also is the UTM9 still a supported/futureproof Firewall?

Thanks for any and all advice and feedback!

  • Hi  ,

Thanks for reaching out to Sophos Community hope you are well.

May we check what are the status of your Resource usage on Dashboard? (CPU, RAM, Log Disk, Data Disk)

Also, 40GB seems not enough (It is the minimum requirement as per this doc guide docs.sophos.com/.../InstallationSystemRequirements.htm) for your said number of users plus logs from security modules (IPS, Web, etc.) you might want to reconsider increasing depending on the log retention, modules that are being logged etc.

For future proofing you may want to check Sophos XGS to utilize, Xstream Architecture - NPU/Fastpath/SSL Offload etc.https://www.sophos.com/en-us/products/next-gen-firewall  to be able to adapt to today's fast-paced growing demand for network resources without compromising security. A local partner or SE can help you elaborate more of this feel free to reach out to them.

Hope this helps and thank you for choosing Sophos
