UTM 9xx on 2012 Mac Mini Server

Hello Everyone.

I currently have UTM 9.7 running on an old PC, but it is not very stable and it uses a lot of space and power for what it is.  I have a late 2012 Mac Mini Server that I recently acquired that is equipped with an i7 processor that I would like to replace the old PC with.  I have created a bootable installer and followed instructions I have found in threads on this forum, but I am not able to get the installer to boot.

I hold the command key during boot and I get a screen that shows the internal Mac SSD and the USB, but when I select the USB it says No bootable drive - insert disk and press any key' and it will not boot.  The USB works on another PC, but I do not have another Mac to try it on.  Am I missing something or will this installation not work?  I have seen posts where others were able to get this to work, so I think I am just doing something wrong.

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

  • OK, so I figured it out.  A Mac Mini (and probably others) will only boot from a USB 2.0 drive.  At least, I was not able to get any of my USB 3 drives to boot and a USB 2 drive worked fine.
