SG115: Sophos UTM9 shutdown time

This is possibly a somewhat silly question, but perhaps someone can answer it anyway. I'm currently setting up shutdown scripts in the event of AC power failure (triggered by the UPS). Sophos is being shutdown by the following command, issued by a server hooked up to the UPS:

plink.exe -ssh -2 -i "gw.ppk" root@10.150.1.34 shutdown now

So it's basically logging in as root, and running the "shutdown now" command. I gave myself a 10 minute window to test this when there would be no internet at the office, and to my surprise Sophos failed to turn off during this time (after 6 minutes I pulled the plug manually, to give it enough time to boot back up and restore connectivity).

Now, the question. How long does the UTM normally take to shutdown? I kind of need this information to plan out the total time the UPS needs to shut everything down, unless I decide to just let Sophos do a hard power-off when the UPS eventually fails...

The question is silly because, well, I could test this during the weekend or something, but... well... then I need to be at the office; if someone would have the information in their head, that'd save me the trip. ;)

PS. The UTM in question is an SG115 unit, so it's not the beefiest of systems, and I can't have the UPS hooked up to it directly - I prefer to have control over the shutdown process via one of our Windows servers.

  • Everyone's hardware differs, perhaps it's best to determine specific shutdown time appropriate to your config.  Just use the webui's shutdown (or restart) function under management to measure.

I run utm virtualized with 4 vcpu's, 6GB of ram.  Underlying cpu is i5 6600K, z170 based motherboard.  Typical shutdown takes ~30-40 seconds (or less).  About the same for boot up.  If I do a restart, I have connectivity usually within ~90s.
