Status update from Sophos?

Sophos, could you update us on the status of the following?

  • Astaro.org old forum data transition
  • Sophos Community topic separations (rather than just General Discussion)

Any communication would be awesome! If it's not going well, that's ok, we are IT professionals, we understand that things don't always work out as planned. The key is to communicate it and create a rapport with your user community.

Thanks!

  • Hi all,

I would like to know too when will be astaro.org again available? I think that Sophos has decided not to return back astaro.org.

Hello, is there anyone who would finally answered your questions?!

    alda
  • We are doing three things: 1) Bringing Astaro.org full *content* back online (but without the ability to post replies/start new threads. 2) Migrating the content from that forum to this community. 3) Working to improve the user experience on this community.
  • Sophos people. Please give us some some kind of a swag date for accomplishing some of these tasks. In a week? In a month? In a year? Something? Anything? Everyone who previously used the Astaro.org UTM support forum on a regular basis, end users and resellers alike, is hurting without the easy and convenient access we used to have.
  • We hoped to have the full content of Astaro.org back up today. However it's taking a heck of a long time as there are so many pages - hundreds of thousands of posts. We're at the stage of copying the content to live but in my testing so far I'm not seeing - at least from the threads I'm checking on Astaro - the second/third/nth pages. I am monitoring it though.

Plus I've just come out of a meeting about the migration of Astaro.org content to this community. Again there is a huge amount of (valuable) content. We do have to get the formatting fixed and converted from BB code to HTML, and sort out the hyperlinks from one post to another, and users need there post counts and original join dates fixing.
  • Thanks ruckus for the feedback. Its refreshing to finally see what is actually going on behind the scenes. Makes me wonder though, what the heck did you guys do to the astaro server that hosed the database so bad that even after 3 weeks, it's barely recovered?
Interesting read about your meeting. The steps you mention look like preliminary gotchas that will need to be sorted before any kind of migration happens. Are you guys still at the early planning stages? This sort of meeting probably would have been more fruitful when the migration was first being considered beginning of this year.

In any case, thanks again for always staying composed and for trying to make the best of a disastrous situation that was not of your own making.

  • The fully content (text) is now available on Astaro.org - please check and see if you can spot any thing missing.  I'm aware of screenshots not being there as the old vBulletin forced you to log in first and now that's not possible the screenshots are hidden (sorry about that - will do better on the migration of the data to here).  Let me know if there is anything else.

The formatting currently looks like this (as a comparison)...

...which is sort of readable.  However we should be able to get a few line breaks in to help out.

In the early stages we checked we could do it - migrate and convert the content.  Once we proved it was possible we paused the development as we were safe in the knowledge that when we finally needed to decommission the Astaro.org forum (gracefully) we would start looking into the finer detail of the formatting etc.  However the sudden shutdown of the site has meant pulling up the original work and whizzing through it to get the content migrated asap.
