Spectre updates for UTM 9?

Will UTM 9 receive the spectre/meltdown updates?

Last update on https://community.sophos.com/kb/en-us/128053 was from Jan 10th, shows UTM9 as still under investigation.

When I run the spectre/meltdown check script it shows my system as vulnerable:

Spectre and Meltdown mitigation detection tool v0.35

Checking for vulnerabilities on current system
Kernel is Linux 3.12.74-0.268741462.g5cd15cc.rb6-smp64 #1 SMP Tue Nov 14 17:40:09 UTC 2017 x86_64
CPU is Intel(R) Pentium(R) CPU  N3700  @ 1.60GHz

Hardware check
* Hardware support (CPU microcode) for mitigation techniques
  * Indirect Branch Restricted Speculation (IBRS)
    * SPEC_CTRL MSR is available:  UNKNOWN  (couldn't read /dev/cpu/0/msr, is msr support enabled in your kernel?)
    * CPU indicates IBRS capability:  UNKNOWN  (couldn't read /dev/cpu/0/cpuid, is cpuid support enabled in your kernel?)
  * Indirect Branch Prediction Barrier (IBPB)
    * PRED_CMD MSR is available:  NO
    * CPU indicates IBPB capability:  NO

    * SPEC_CTRL MSR is available:  UNKNOWN  (couldn't read /dev/cpu/0/msr, is msr support enabled in your kernel?)
    * CPU indicates STIBP capability:  NO
  * Enhanced IBRS (IBRS_ALL)
    * CPU indicates ARCH_CAPABILITIES MSR availability:  NO
    * ARCH_CAPABILITIES MSR advertises IBRS_ALL capability:  NO
  * CPU explicitly indicates not being vulnerable to Meltdown (RDCL_NO):  NO

* CPU vulnerability to the three speculative execution attacks variants
  * Vulnerable to Variant 1:  YES
  * Vulnerable to Variant 2:  YES
  * Vulnerable to Variant 3:  YES

CVE-2017-5753 [bounds check bypass] aka 'Spectre Variant 1'
* Kernel has array_index_mask_nospec:  UNKNOWN  (couldn't check (missing 'readelf' tool, please install it, usually it's in the 'binutils' package))
* Kernel has the Red Hat/Ubuntu patch:  UNKNOWN  (missing 'strings' tool, please install it, usually it's in the binutils package)
* Checking count of LFENCE instructions following a jump in kernel...  UNKNOWN  (couldn't check (missing 'readelf' tool, please install it, usually it's in the 'binutils' package))
> STATUS:  UNKNOWN  (Couldn't find kernel image or tools missing to execute the checks)

CVE-2017-5715 [branch target injection] aka 'Spectre Variant 2'
* Mitigation 1
  * Kernel is compiled with IBRS/IBPB support:  NO
  * Currently enabled features
    * IBRS enabled for Kernel space:  NO
    * IBRS enabled for User space:  NO
    * IBPB enabled:  NO
* Mitigation 2
  * Kernel compiled with retpoline option:  NO
  * Kernel compiled with a retpoline-aware compiler:  NO
> STATUS:  VULNERABLE  (IBRS hardware + kernel support OR kernel with retpoline are needed to mitigate the vulnerability)

CVE-2017-5754 [rogue data cache load] aka 'Meltdown' aka 'Variant 3'
* Kernel supports Page Table Isolation (PTI):  NO
* PTI enabled and active:  NO
* Running as a Xen PV DomU:  NO
> STATUS:  VULNERABLE  (PTI is needed to mitigate the vulnerability)

  • In my opinion - at least when the UTM isn't a virtual machine - the attack vector for meltdown/spectre is relatively small.
    After seeing how quality assurance suffered by quick & dirty patch and firmware releases for PCs and servers I hope Sophos will take much more time with testing before they release an update that impacts the system stability. I would go so far to say that a hardware UTM or XG doesn't need any spectre or meltdown patches at all but thats my personal opinion.

  • Thanks for the reply, yes especially the Spectre patching has been messy.
