100% CPU out of nowhere on home firewall

I've been using a small UTM appliance for a few years for my small business and installed a home version for the house a year or two ago.  Both have worked nicely with very few issues.

As of yesterday, my home UTM is acting up and is pegged at 100% CPU.  Looking at historical CPU usage, it's 1-3% normally then just pegs at 100% and continues to after a reboot as well.

I've read a few articles but am stumped how to isolate this.  My ability to access webadmin is iffy, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.  Trying to turn off IPS as an example doesn't work, the interface times out and it never succeeds.  I'm on the latest version of the UTM software, have more than adequate hardware and RAM that has worked great for a while.

Thanks for any thoughts on how to get this limping firewall running normally again.

  • Eventually did decide to disconnect the external ethernet cable, which bought me the time to access things more normally.  It was a large amount of traffic that I've isolated to a kid's kindle fire that is just hammering the network.  Put in in airplane mode, problem goes away.  Turn it back on, watch the CPU climb again to 100% in about 20 seconds.

Haven't gone further yet to see what the heck this kindle fire is doing yet.  But it's not the UTM's fault.  I might look at excluding it from IPS, but for now, it's just staying off until I can talk to my kid and see what he uses it for and what might be downloading.
