Hi Paul,

starting a web request by using https implies that your browser should establish a SSL connection on port 443 by default, if not configured differently.
So if you define another port number you have to explicitly tell your browser so by adding the port to the end of your request.

OK, so the User Portal is SSL only.  I think that should be indicated on the User Portal/Advanced configuration tab.  That tab says you can use port 80 but doesn't indicate SSL has to be used.  In my opinion port 80 shouldn't be an option as it would definitely confuse users.

You do not have to use port 80 that is why it is an option. A lot of firewalls only allow certain ports out. 80/443/8080/8443. So you need to use one of them.

By Default browsers use port 80 for http and port 443 for https. If you divert from the standard you need to specify the protocol in the beginning and the port at the end.
