i just instlaled the new 8.91 beta and i've got one thing to say...this thing is smokin fast..[[:)]] visual issues aside I even tried the instlal the backup right form the initial screen and it worked fine. There most assuredly is a cost though:
1. ram usage. UTM 9 is using much more ram. With 8.301 i could comfortably use my vm.swappiness trick AND local http proxy database. That is no longer the case here. I am at nearly 90% of actual ram usage and am already swapping. this thing looks to need at least 3 gigs of ram if you want to even think about ram based http content filter proxy. I'm not going to vm.swappiness until i see how it goes. I'm also staying at 2 gigs of ram to see how it goes. especially since many appliances are going to be sold with 2 gigs of ram in them.
2. Increased cpu usage. Nice thing about virtual machines is you can easily see what they are doing. There's about a 10% cpu hit right now. Now i am running with 4 vcpus however the big difference is how often is my physical cpu having to leave it's 1197 idle rate. for the utm9 about 10% not huge but noticeable on a reporting basis..[[:)]]
