[8.900][ANSWERED] IPV6 Nat ?

Hello,

For now i had a masquerading which is :

NETWORK : Lan(network vith ipv4 and ipv6) 
INTERFACE : Uplink interfaces
USE ADDRESS : Primary

With this one all my ipv6 devices are nated with the astaro ipv6.

Now i set up that :

NETWORK : Lan-v4(new network object with only ipv4) 
INTERFACE : Uplink interfaces
USE ADDRESS : Primary

With this one my ipv6 devices can uses there own ipv6 wich is better for me.

I'm don't realy understand why there's ipv6 nat (isn't ipv6 designed to have public ip on each devices and so remove nat ?) and i'm trying to find how i can disable properly this ipv6-nat.

    Hi,
    I don't have answer, just a couple of questions.

    What affect does the IPv6 NAT have when you have a IPv6 tunnel eg freenet6 etc?

    Why has the IPv6 NAT been automatically enabled on existing NATs?

    What happens to my networks that don't have IPv6 because the devices are not capable of using IPv6? I removed the IPv6 definition from the interface and that removed the NAT.

    If I turn NAT off for IPv4 will IPv6 traffic still pass?

    Hi guys,

    NAT was invented because the IPv4 address space is quite limited and therefore at some point it was impossible, to assign public IPv4 addresses to every system. For IPv6 we have this problem no more, because there will be enough addresses for every system, for the next couple of decades at least [;)]

    However beside the limit of available IP addresses, NAT also solves other issues:
     * Server Load Balancing (without the need of Proxys)
     * Interface Load Balancing
     * Dynamic IP addresses (You not always have a static IPv6 prefix)

    So NAT for IPv6 is just the beginning, Server and Interface Load Balancing will follow.

    If you dont want NAT for IPv6, just use the "Any IPv4" Object for your Masquerading/NAT rules.

    The same rules as for IPv4 NAT applies. Note: There is no translation between IPv4 or IPv6 here.
    If you have an IPv4 or IPv6 only network, you only get a NAT rule for the corresponding address family.

    Hi Ulrich,
    I have been thinking about your answer concerning the Any IPv4 and then tried to apply it tonight and as I thought there is nowhere in the NAT (MASQ) to apply Any IPv4. The choices are network and interface.

    Just use the Network dnd box. Either use the Any IPv4 object or create a new network object for your IPv4 LAN range.
