You could say that the bandwidth used by endpoints is negligible, generally just configuration and reporting data is exchanged.
The effective updates for endpoints are via internet.
If an endpoint can't connect it is considered by the Asg as out-of-date; the endpoint will retry connecting using a timeout interval.

Does the endpoint connect directly to the ASG or does it do that via the internet over some sophos hosted broker service?

So it should work well over WAN, but I can not connect local clients without internet access?

Short answer: Yes[:)].

Detailed answer: The implementation of Endpoint Protection uses an internet only communication model. For the first release we won't be supporting an intranet communication model.

Q: How much bandwidth does that stuff use?
A: Like Adrian answered, the bandwidth used is negligible after all the initial downloads are finished. At the moment the antivirus part(~80-90 Mb) needs to be downloaded after install(although we're working on another package that contains that too).

Q: Are updates directly via internet or do they use the asg?
A: For communication it works like this: 
Endpoint  Sophos LiveConnect(cloud service)  UTM
For updates:
Endpoint  Akamai warehouse

Q:What does an endpoint do when it can't connect to the asg?
A: It keeps retrying to contact Sophos LiveConnect. After the initial requests, the interval for retry increases.
