I had thought the loaded attack patterns are also based on what services are running. I may be wrong.

Hi Knome,

you can adjust the rule age of the pattern in the Attack Pattern Tab, default is 12 month but you can set it to unlimited.
It is also possible to enable file based rules in the Advanced Tab of IPS.

EDIT: and of course you can activate the extra warnings if you want that all rules are activated
