[9.165][ANSWERED] Hyper-V 2012 R2 integration services

Tested the beta 9.20 on Hyper-V 2012 sp1 but no integration services added. i.m.o. a basic need to run on HV to start with.

Hyper-V Integration Services optimizes the drivers of the virtual environments to provide end users with the best possible user experience. The suite improves virtual machine management by replacing generic operating system driver files for the mouse, keyboard, video, network and SCSI controller components. It also synchronizes time between the guest and host operating systems and can provide file interoperability and a heartbeat

There are default integration services for several linux distri's, but Astaro is a kind of private and secured distri so the usual services will not work. If integrations services are not implemented in Astaro you culd bump into all kind of issues with recovery, bindings, networkcards etc.

To claim to be Hyper-V comatible the least you should arrange is proper implemantation of integration services.

did you run just a single UTM or a HA System? Which functions do you use?

I've many problems with UTM as HA running on Hyper-V V3. As an example look here.

The HA System running on Hyper-V is stable enough for a testlab, but not for business use. Please try do use dynamic memory, or server backup to backup the VMs. With actual drivers you can backup also Linux based VMs online, without freezing the VMs. The implemented drivers don't support this.

Lots of problems can occur NOT having Integration Services implemented. Please bimmerdriver, do some additional reading on this, there is plenty of tech-info on this part. Most issues will relate to optimum performance and snap-shots and VSS not working. That makes Astaro (and for what its worth any other OS missing this) not suitable for production in Hyper-V. Sure it runs on Hyper-V and as long as you have no demands for back-ups, performance, stability etc. there are no problems, but for serious implementations you have to seriously reconsider.

Hyper-V, Integration Services provide support for five unique components that require a secure interface between a parent and child partition. These functions, also referred to as Integration Components (ICs), are:

Time synchronization
Heartbeat
Shutdown
Key/Value pair exchange
Volume Shadow-Copy Service (VSS)

Especially VSS is key when trying to implememt any kind of proper (live)back-up and/or recovery system, even third party tools use shadow-copys to create proper recovery images wtihout downtime. By missing this yo will stumble on to problems in production. But any other of the above IC's are in some form essential for proper production operation. 


Anyway, Integration Services on board in Astaro is simply essential if you claim to be usable for Hyper-V. Making an ISO run in Hyper-V was not the issue to start with, It runs, we agree on that, we have some Astaro VM's running too and I love Astaro, but NOT in production Hyper-V (and trust me, I would be the first to kick some Astaro's into production, but not at this moment.) 

I really am hoping Astaro developent will pick this up seriously, so indeed not just "run" it as Hyper-V VM, but actually "use" it in a production set-up, including scale-out fileservers, storage and VM failover-clusters, MS System Centre tools and proper disaster recovery like DPM or even tools Like Veaam and see the Astaro VM get into trouble here, which is raelly a shame  because Astaro remains a very cool UTM..!!
