[8.281][QUESTION][ANSWERED] Wireless security connected list

Hi,
the wireless client list does keep a list of all the connected devices. While it keeps the devices that have been seen in previous version of 8.2xx and restored for a backup, the new connections drop off the list when they disconnect.

The transient devices don't have a delete button, where as the other do. Some the devices never have the details updated after they have been on the network then left.

I am also not sure about the Wireless using the DNS to lookup devices.

    This is intended behavior to not let the client list grow without limits. A client that is new to the ASG will be removed from the list after some time. Only if you manually edit this client (give it a name for example) it will be added persistently to the list.


    The transient devices don't have a delete button, where as the other do.


    Correct, since they are only in the list for some time. 


    Some the devices never have the details updated after they have been on the network then left.


    Could you please elaborate?


    I am also not sure about the Wireless using the DNS to lookup devices.


    There are no DNS lookups done for wireless clients.

    Hi,
    let me tackle the 1st and 4th points as one.
    I have not added names of the devices to this list. In previous versions the name was picked up from I always assumed the ASG DNS. My blackberry for instance used to have its name, now it only has its mac address.
    Where as a laptop which is not in the DNS has its name displayed in the wireless client list, netbios?

    The 3rd point, forget this one, this appears to have been fixed because I just saw an update happen while writing and researching this answer.

    The hostname will be used if the ASG DHCP server has this information. So, neither DNS nor netbios is used. If the ASG's DHCP server is used and the client provides its hostname in the DHCP requests you should see the hostname. If an external DHCP server is used you won't see an IP address and also no hostname.

    Hi Helmut,
    you answer posses some interesting questions when investigated deeper.
    1/. the DHCP server has picked up the laptop name from the laptop
    2/. the IP address assigned by the ASG is the static address assigned to my wife's MAC.
    3/. The blackberry's name is in the ASG DNS and static address assignment, but not in the DHCP assignment table.

    I am trying to correlate your answers with what I see on my ASG.

    What I see is some of the devices in v8.281 don't get their names displayed, where as in 8.202 they did. The devices that get their name displayed have static address assignments and in the ASG DNS and networks tabs.

    The ASG DHCP server has picked up the laptop's name from the laptop at address allocation time as displays the name in the wireless tabs.

    The DHCP server has assigned a statically assigned address to a device with a different MAC address.

    I hope that is clearer?

    Ok, however, there haven't been many changes in this area but if the behavior is different we should investigate ...

    Hi Helmut,
    another minor bug.

    The wireless picks up the name from the DHCP server, the reports pick up the name from the DNS which just happens to have a different name for that IP address.
