[8.055][QUESTION][ANSWERED] Wireless with AP10 - wlan0 interface

I was one of the lucky one and received an AP10 for my partition in the v8.0 beta contest. And today I (finally) got around to install the 8.1 beta, anxious to connect the AP10.

I've connected it for now to my gigabit switch which in turn is connected to eth0, the 'Internal' interface. It got an IP and was seen by my astaro. (I skipped the wlan auto-config)

I then created my wireless network with my old SSID so I didn't have to change every gadget I have - i used a DIR-655 in bridge mode before. I saw all the powered on gadgets/laptops etc connecting/trying to connect. My newly configured wirless network had a "(wlan0)" tag behind the name.

Where "is" this wlan0? Tunneled over (in this case) eth0 "into" the AP10? Is it some kind of remote interface (a la a red interface)? Do I have to create a wlan0 interface with it's own IP-segment for my wireless gadgets? How do I treat the wlan0 interface I can now create?

My switch is just a "stupid" DLINK 8-port, so it doesn't do VLAN. Security wise, and segmentation-wise, should I connect the AP10 to another switch on another astaro interface? Does AP10 support direct connection without a crossover network cable to the astaro in the event of me having only one AP10 (and no AP30)?


OT - how come the AP10 and AP30 only have a 100Mbit interface while supporting faster wireless connections speeds (802.11n)? I saw my Dell Latitude 4300 with Intel WiFi 5300 connect with 150Mbps to the AP10..

    Joffer, my understanding is that the Wireless features use RED technology internally; the wlan0 is a tunneled RED-style interface.  It should be fine on the same LAN as your internal interface.  Also, in my case, the AP10 works just fine directly connected to a spare ethernet port on my test unit, straight cable used.

     YOu can choose to bridge your WLAN0 (using the Wireless Security Options, not using Bridging under Network Menu), or you can define it as a new interface on a separate subnet, etc.

    Yep, correct. When using the "seperate zone" mode all traffic is tunneled from the APs back to the ASG and ends up on the appropriate wlanX interface (one for each SSID).

    I poked around in the logs and found hits about "RED technology" being used [:)]
    Thanks. Think my questions here is answered.

    Should I change the subject to [ANSWERED] or is that something The Beta Bot or Astaro guys do?
