[8.050][BUG][OPEN] Install.tar missing during install

More randomness with the 8.050 install;  I randomly get the message "Install.tar wasn't found on the installation media" ... looking at the log, the message is /install/install/install.tar: No such file or directory.

I've tried multiple CD burns (using the same burner that produces working 8.002 Disks, etc.), downloaded the ISO twice, etc.  still it's a random chance as to whether the package copy completes successfully.  I am using a USB CDROM Drive; thinking that maybe the drive was going bad, I even purchased a new, different one.  The issues persist.  Everything works great, and is predictable, with the 8.002 ISO.

    Hi Bruce, at the boot prompt type classic and install and see if that helps. Otherwise I would double check my ram because the file install.tar is there on the cd[;)]

    They have changed a bunch of stuff on the loader which is not playing nice for me either.

    I appreciate the advice, but this machine has been thoroughly tested.  Memtest passes, no problems with HD, CD reads fine... machine has been running for a while on 8.001 / 8.002.  Installs always work fine with an 8.002 ISO.  Tested on an identical device, same issues arise.  There is something different with the installer in this new version.

    Did you try classic at the boot prompt?

    My machine works with all v8s also just not with 8.0.5 unless I use classic.

    Base system was updated from SUSE Linux Enterprise (SLE) 11 to SLE 11 SP1. Includes updates to e.g. glibc, gcc, quagga and fixes for many more packages.


    They probably should have waited for this part till v8.5. 8.1 should not be a major release just minor improvements on the existing code but with sp1 applied, that is more than minor changes in base functionality.

    The fact that it does intermittently install when just hitting Enter at the boot prompt is the issue  ...  I think we need to get to the bottom of why it crashes intermittently (I'm having more than just this issue with this new ISO).  Why would I need classic now when before it was not needed (Versions 8.000, 8.001, and 8.002)? This is pointing at a larger problem.  I'll wait to see what Astaro has to say about it.  Thanks again for the input.

    Hi, i seem to have the exact same problem on my system, i use the ssi ISO 
    ssi-8.050-36.1.iso
    MD5sum: 8ca84673484f17bd8555dbc036637baa

    Ater formatting the partitions it gives an error that it cannot find install.tar

    I take it you are installing this on an official ASG appliance?  Which model?

    Interesting, its even failing on an astaro hardware appliance? Which appliance are you using?

    i'm installing on an ASG 120, i'll try the software image now, i hope the hardware check is missing in the beta [:)]

    That is very interesting.  I guess you've tried the usual things, reburning the CD at slower speed, and tried a different USB CD Drive?

    The appliance I'm using is a "cousin" if you will, of the 120, chassis made by the same OEM, but it's on an Intel Atom platform (different chipsets and everything), while the 120 is on a VIA platform... don't see the commonality there, other than we're having the same problem.

    My appliances have worked well with V7.5xx and all versions of V8 up to this point.

    Hopefully someone from the beta team will be by to ask us some questions that might shed some light on the problem.
